Magnetic field strength, or magnetizing force, is a vector quantity that measures the intensity of a magnetic field generated by an electric current or a magnetic body at a specific point. Measured in Oersteds (Oe) or Amperes per meter (A/m), it defines the field's fundamental capacity to induce magnetic flux within a surrounding medium.
Industrial Applications
In real-world magnetic engineering, magnetic field strength (H) is critical for designing solenoids, electric motors, inductors, and permanent magnet assemblies. Engineers infer H from Hall-probe or fluxmeter B measurements in air, or determine it from drive current or H-coil measurements when mapping B-H loops. Controlling H ensures components operate efficiently within their linear permeability range without causing magnetic core saturation or unwanted thermal losses.
Technical Specifications
For a standard cylindrical solenoid or coil, magnetic field strength is calculated using the following formula:

H: Magnetic Field Strength in Amperes per meter (A/m)
N: Number of conductive wire turns
I: Electric current in Amperes (A)
L: Magnetic circuit length in meters (m)
Unit Conversion: 1 Oe ≈ 79.577 A/m
Manufacturing & Engineering Challenges: Maintaining target H levels in tight spaces requires balancing coil turn density with thermal dissipation limits. Self-demagnetizing fields (Hd), set by magnet geometry, oppose the magnet's magnetization. Combined with external reverse fields and elevated temperature, they can push the operating point below the knee of the demagnetization curve. Careful finite element analysis (FEA) modeling is required to prevent irreversible demagnetization in high-temperature applications.
