Magnetic induction (B), also known as magnetic flux density, is the total magnetic field induced per unit area perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic path. It combines external magnetic field strength (H) and a material's intrinsic magnetization (M) to define the functional strength and concentration of a magnetic field within a substance or air gap.

Industrial Applications

In magnetic engineering, magnetic induction is the core metric used to calculate mechanical force, torque output, and field homogeneity across working air gaps. Engineers measure B using calibrated Gaussmeters and 3D Hall-effect sensor arrays to profile flux distribution in high-performance assemblies. Accurately mapping and controlling magnetic induction ensures that systems like voice coil actuators, magnetic dipoles, and linear drives maintain peak force density without driving surrounding iron components into magnetic saturation, which causes unwanted energy loss and stray flux leakage.

Technical Specifications

Formulas:

  • Total Field Equation: B = µ₀ (H + M) = µ H

  • Flux Density Equation: B = Φ / A

Variable Definitions:

  • B = Magnetic induction / flux density (Tesla [T] or Gauss [G])

  • H = Magnetic field strength (A/m or Oersted [Oe])

  • M = Intrinsic magnetization (A/m)

  • µ₀ = Permeability of free space (4π × 10⁻⁷ H/m)

  • µ = Absolute magnetic permeability of the medium (H/m)

  • Φ = Total magnetic flux (Webers [Wb] or Maxwells [Mx])

  • A = Cross-sectional area normal to the flux path (m²)

Units & Conversions:

  • 1 Tesla (T) = 1 Weber per square meter (Wb/m²) = 10,000 Gauss (G)

Manufacturing Challenges:

  • Thermal Degradation: Operating temperature spikes lower intrinsic magnetization (M), causing reversible or permanent drops in total magnetic induction (B).

  • Mechanical Air Gaps: Maintaining tight tolerances across physical gaps is critical; unexpected stack-up variations drastically reduce localized B-field strength.
