Intrinsic Coercive Force (Hci or Hcj) measures a permanent magnet’s inherent resistance to demagnetization. It represents the exact amount of reverse magnetic field strength required to reduce the material's intrinsic induction Bi to absolute zero.

Industrial Applications

In magnetic engineering, intrinsic coercivity is the ultimate metric for determining a permanent magnet's survivability in harsh, dynamic environments. Design engineers rely on $H_{ci}$ values when specifying materials for electric vehicle (EV) traction motors, magnetic couplings, and heavy-duty actuators. In these applications, magnets face severe opposing magnetic fields (from motor windings) combined with high operating temperatures. A robust intrinsic coercive force guarantees that the magnet will not suffer from unrecoverable, permanent flux loss when exposed to these transient field spikes and thermal loads, ensuring the long-term reliability of the motor or magnetic assembly.

Technical Specifications
  • Intrinsic Induction Equation:

The intrinsic coercive force is realized when Bi = 0 at an applied reverse field of H = -Hci.

  • Standard Units of Measurement:

    • CGS: Oersteds (Oe) or kilo-Oersteds (kOe)

    • SI: Amperes per meter (A/m) or kiloamperes per meter (kA/m)

    • Conversion: 1 kOe ~= 79.58 kA/m

  • The Temperature Coefficient (β): Hci is highly sensitive to heat. For example, standard Neodymium (NdFeB) magnets have a negative temperature coefficient (β), meaning their resistance to demagnetization drops rapidly as the assembly heats up.

  • Manufacturing Solutions (GBD): To push Hci higher without sacrificing the magnet's overall strength (Remanence / Br), top-tier manufacturers utilize Grain Boundary Diffusion (GBD). This process introduces heavy rare-earth elements like Dysprosium (Dy) or Terbium (Tb) directly into the grain boundaries to drastically increase demagnetization resistance.
